As a video-artist, filmmaker and photographer, my work is concerned with derelict spaces and bleak aesthetic environments. I am interested in these grim places; places where aesthetic value is no longer viewed as important, or enforced. A nomadic existence is at the centre of my practice; I travel around in search of these particular types of environments in which to to create work, sometimes empty places, deserted by people for some reason, temporary or permanent.
In 2007 I travelled to the Chernobyl exclusion zone, to the empty city of Pripyat. Other places I have travelled to make work since then include Bosnia & Herzegovina, Moldova, the seperatist state of Transnistria, Georgia, and Armenia.
My film and video works are comprised of extremely long takes, unedited footage transcribing time in real time. By using long takes and few cuts in my video work, I aim to give the viewers a sense of time passing, time lost, and the relationship of one moment in time to another.

I spend a long time setting up each shot, and then once I am happy I simply let the camera roll. I have arrived at this minimalist approach after much experimentation with different styles and methods of working. I sometimes create large-scale multi-channel video installations, comprised of several of these long takes projected side by side around a space, to surround the viewer. Other times I employ the use of a number of smaller monitors. I use sound to a great extent too, sometimes juxtaposing external non-related sounds and other times manipulating actual sounds captured from the footage itself. |
